The Ashen Marches

Farmland, forest, fen and ash on a map of hexes, carved up between three banners. The north belongs to the dead. Past it, worse.

The hex map of the Ashen Marches with its borders: Brennwald's blue in the western woods and fens, Renvaar's purple up the road north, Solvaria's gold in the eastern hills, the contested south hatched, and the Dreadlands sunk in darkness at the top.

Four districts, each with its own chat and its own news. Tap a place on the map.

VillageWhere every hero wakes

Lemonhill

A village of whitewashed walls and lemon groves on a hill above the sea. Everyone who ever went looking for trouble set out from here, and most of them came back.

A town square: a tower, a chapel, houses and a barracks with golden roofs, the innkeeper holding a ham and the smith at the anvil.
Villages are safe groundSmaller than a town, with only some of its doors, a tavern at least. Walking in secures your satchel.
Three banners

Pick a side. Or don't.

The Empire of Renvaar is taking Brennwald road by road. Solvaria lends to both, and wins either way.

On a ridge at dusk, three companies stand under their standards: Brennwald in blue, Renvaar in purple and Solvaria in gold, each a knight before a spearman.
  • ErrandsCarry a banner's sealed orders. Or break the seal and sell them to the other side.
  • ReckoningsCross a banner and its riders will find you on the road.
  • BribesMen who fight for coin can be paid to let you pass. Mostly.

Lemonhill, where every hero wakes, flies no banner. The south is fought over.

In the ember-lit ruins of his keep, Lord Varrek, a huge knight in blackened plate, stands with two steel revenants against the hero.
The region's last boss

Lord Varrek, the Ashen LordLevel 18 · the Ruins of Varrek Keep

Plate black with fire and a sword as long as a man. Most heroes who walk into his hall don't walk out.

So walk first. Standing before any boss, begin a Trial: for three hours your real steps wear it down. A full Trial leaves the boss and its guard 40% weaker.

Beyond Emberfall

The Dreadlands

Red dark and ash under jagged peaks: a troll twice a man's height breathes slowly, a minotaur waits in the smoke behind it, skeletons stand in their ranks, and embers drift up.
Lv ??

Nothing there shows its level. Walking heals no one. Fall there, and you may come home with nothing.

Osric has PERISHED in the Dreadlands.
