Marchling is a walking game: your real steps move a hero through a fantasy world. To do that, the game needs some of your health data. This page explains what we keep, why, who can see it, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it.
Who we are: Marchling. Contact: privacy@marchling.com.
What we keep, and why
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Your email address | To sign you in (with your password or a one-time code), and to send the codes that confirm your account or reset your password. We never send you anything else. |
| Your password, if you set one | To sign you in. It's kept by our sign-in service, scrambled (hashed): nobody can read it, us included. |
| Steps and distance, one total per day, and how many minutes you walked briskly | They move your hero and earn experience. Minute-by-minute step counts are checked when they arrive (for fairness) and are never kept. |
| Sleep sessions, only if you allow it | A good night's sleep gives your hero a bonus. A short night is never punished. |
| Weight and height, only if you agree (18 and over) | Your private Vitality track. Never shown to anyone, never used for the game's experience or power. You can withdraw at any time, and they are deleted. |
| Birth month and year, country, units | For the age rules (13 and over to play, 18 and over for body data) and how numbers are shown. |
| Your hero | Level, equipment, journal, banner and guild, and where your hero stands in the game world. We never collect your real location. |
| A fairness log, and a device check | What your phone reported and what the game counted, to spot cheating; and, now and then, a check with Google Play that the app and the phone are genuine (we keep only whether they passed). |
| Chat lines | What you write in your district's chat or your guild's hall. |
| Arena duels | Who you fought in the arena and how it went, for your record, and a replay of each duel. |
| The Exchange | What you list, buy and sell at the Exchange, and gifts between friends. |
| Friends, guild and league | Who your friends are, your guild, your place in a weekly league. |
| Crash reports | If the app crashes: what went wrong, the phone's model and system version, the app's version, and your account's id. No email, no health data. |
We read health data from Health Connect on Android (from Apple Health on iPhone, once Marchling comes to it). We only read steps, distance, sleep and weight. We never write health data (except a test tool used only by the developer).
Who sees what
- Other players near you in the game world see your hero's name, title, level, equipment, banner and what your hero is doing.
- Players in your district's chat see what you write there.
- Your friends see your hero's deeds (levels reached, foes defeated, items found), as long as you share them. You can switch this off.
- Your guild sees how many days you reached your step goal this week. Never your steps.
- Your league sees your place and your goal days.
- At the Exchange, other players see what you list for sale, under your hero's name.
- Nobody else sees your steps, sleep or weight. Ever.
We never sell your data, and we never use it for advertising. There are no ads in Marchling.
Where your data is kept, and who helps us
- Supabase keeps it, on servers in the European Union (Frankfurt, Germany), and processes it on our behalf.
- Resend sends the sign-in emails and the muster roll's letters on our behalf.
- Sentry receives crash reports on our behalf, in the European Union.
- Google delivers the app through Google Play and answers the device check.
Data is encrypted in transit.
How long we keep it
As long as you have an account. When you delete your account, everything is deleted: your hero, your health data, your password, your friends and guild memberships, everything.
Some things are deleted sooner, every night, whether or not you have an account:
- District chat lines: after 3 days (they're shown for a day and a half). Guild hall lines: after 2 weeks (shown for a week). A reported line is kept up to 30 days, for review.
- Copies of lines hidden by reports, kept for moderation: after 90 days.
- The fairness log: after 60 days, or after a year if it shows something that looked wrong.
- Arena replays: after a month. Who you fought and how it went stays, for your record.
- Your friends' feed of deeds: after 30 days.
- Weekly league results: after 12 weeks, except a week where you won a pennant.
- Daily Haul records: after a year.
- Crash reports: after about 30 days.
Your rights
You can, at any time:
- Download everything we keep about you: in the game, Menu → Your data → Download my data.
- Withdraw your body data: Health → Body → withdraw consent. Every weigh-in and your height are deleted.
- Stop sharing your deeds with friends: Friends → "Friends hear of my deeds".
- Delete your account and everything in it: Menu → Your data → Delete my account. Or, without the app, write to privacy@marchling.com from the email your hero is bound to, and we'll delete it within 30 days (how).
If you live in the EU or UK, you also have the right to correct your data, to restrict or object to its use, and to complain to your data protection authority. We rely on your consent for health data (which you can withdraw in Health Connect or in the game at any time) and on providing the game you signed up for for everything else.
The muster roll (signing up on this website)
If you put your name down on the muster roll at marchling.com, we keep:
- The name you gave your hero, your email and your phone's kind (Android or iPhone): to invite you to the test and to tell you when Marchling opens. On Android, Google Play lets testers in by their Google email, so we pass the confirmed Android emails to Google Play's tester list when the test opens.
- A scrambled, one-way form of your internet address (never the address itself): only to stop one place flooding the roll.
We send you a letter to confirm your place, and one more when the roll opens. Nothing else, ever. A name nobody confirms is struck off after 7 days. A confirmed name is kept until the opening letter has gone out after Marchling's public launch, then deleted, or sooner if you leave: every letter has a link to leave the roll, or write to privacy@marchling.com. The roll is for people aged 16 and over, and we rely on your consent, given when you sign up.
Children
Marchling is for players aged 13 and over. Body data (weight, height) is only for players 18 and over. If you believe a child under 13 has signed up, contact us and we will delete the account.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date above and tell you in the game before the change takes effect.
